Kevonya Elzia, MA, BS, RN, is the Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion at the National Healthcare for the Homeless Council. She has been in healthcare for 23 years, 20 as a nurse in various roles from acute care to community health outreach nurse working in permanent supportive housing. While working as a Registered Nurse she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Human Services to focus on understanding the role social paradigm, system structures, and institutional policy play in connection to the gaps that exist within our current medical model. She then went on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Integrative Health to research ways to heal trauma through individual and collective processes that understand trauma’s root causes and end the ways that violence manifests and becomes a part of our systems and institutions. She utilizes a healing-centered restorative engagement approach which looks at how can what's right be used to support the healing and restoration of the person or community from harms that occur. Over the last eleven years she has worked to develop curriculum and tools to aid individuals and organizations in dismantling the systems and social practices that continue to perpetuate cycles of internalized, interpersonal, and institutional oppression.
