CMJ2 - Narrative Leadership: A Practical Tool for Connecting Teams and Communities

In this interactive session, participants will 1) identify how relational leadership develops compassionate and human-centered individuals and teams; 2) understand how psychological safety promotes collaboration and optimization within interprofessional teams; and 3) practice the application of storytelling in our everyday work environment to connect with others and build psychological safety.

Relational leadership (RL) is a human-centered approach to working with others that cultivates connection and awareness to increase belonging, collaboration, equity, and impact across health systems. It is a vital practice for individuals and teams to be compassionate, overcome challenges, and lead change. Workshop participants can enhance their interprofessional teamwork and cultivate person-centered care by applying relational practices.

Psychological safety is a shared belief that team members can take interpersonal risks. It is essential to high-functioning teams and high-quality health care. When present, team members have space and opportunity to 1) share new ideas and insights, 2) collaborate instead of merely cooperating, and 3) consistently see their impact in change efforts.

Storytelling is foundational to build psychological safety and lead teams and organizations in a relational way. Narrative Leadership is a framework for storytelling that builds cohesive, interdependent teams and strengthens team culture to ultimately achieve a shared mission. Sharing stories and inviting others to share their experiences promotes well-being and supports people feeling seen, heard, and valued.
